6 best tips for car painting: do you know these methods?
Latest company news about 6 best tips for car painting: do you know these methods?

You've decided to paint your car yourself, that's great! Unfortunately, painting a car is not as simple as picking up a spray gun and spraying paint on your car. There are some steps you can take to ensure that your paint job doesn't look worse than before. What are the techniques for car painting? Here, I give you 6 tips for preparing car painting, which are information about what you should do and what to pay attention to.

1. Disassembly
Car painting tutorial: In this step, you will remove removable unpainted parts such as trim, emblems, etc. Yes, you can cover them with tape and paper, but you may leave tape residue on the car. Also, taping around bumpers, emblems, and door handles is just a foolish thing to do. Take the time to remove these items before painting, it will make your final product look better.
For parts that cannot be removed, you can cover them up. However, regular masking tape is not suitable for this job, you should use automotive tape instead. It has higher heat resistance, higher adhesion, and higher tensile strength. The same goes for large area masking, do not use newspaper or patterned paper, ink will bleed during painting. Automotive masking paper is a better choice.

2. Sanding
Sanding is an important process and you have to do a lot of things. Really, you'll be doing it almost between every step to properly prepare your car for painting, so be prepared for bodywork. If you want a good result, you have to be patient, right? Fortunately, you can use a DA sander to speed up the process. Use the DA sander to sand flat surfaces and then hand sand on curves and irregular surfaces. It's best to sand and remove old paint until bare metal is exposed.
Rust is one of the things you may have to deal with while sanding. Leaving rust spots will ruin your paint job, it won't go away, it will continue to corrode the metal. If it's light, you can sand it off with paint and other damage. But if the rust is too heavy, use a rust remover and in that case, you have to wait 48 hours before continuing the work.
Before starting the sanding, clean the surface with a wax and grease remover. You don't want dust and debris to bring sand into the car's surface. Start with 180 grit sandpaper to remove rust and damage, gradually working up to 220 grit, then 320 grit to remove scratches. If you want a finer sanding, you can start with lower grits. Then choose to use 400 or 600 grit depending on whether you want a solid color paint or metallic color paint. Metallic colors will show more colors than solid colors, so they require finer sanding.
You don't want to sand in just one direction. Moving in a cross-hatch pattern will make the sanding more even and level. You can use a guide coat during this process, it shows the highs and lows of the surface, so you can check for scratches on the car's surface. Instead of blowing off the sanding, consider using a vacuum cleaner. This way, it will suck up all the sand instead of letting it fly around and into your lungs. It also helps prevent sanding from getting into small holes and scratches, making it harder to find when you do body filler. Wipe the surface clean before moving on to the next sanding.

3. Surface preparation
What are the techniques for car painting? Paint will show everything, remember that. Don't expect paint to cover everything up, no, it will make things worse. For major dents, you can try pulling them out with heat and tools. For smaller dents and other imperfections, you can use body filler to repair them. Mix the filler with hardener, put it in the area that needs filling, and wait for it to dry. You'll have to sand it down until it's level with the surrounding surface. For small holes and fine scratches that are difficult to fill with body filler, there are glaze and spot putties. They can easily fill them and give you a perfect surface. During this process, you have to do a lot of sanding and cleaning, and pay attention to details to make sure you don't miss any spots. The use of a guide coat can also help you better observe the surface.

4. Priming
Car painting tutorial: This is an important part of preparing for car painting. The primer will act as an adhesive between the bare metal surface and the paint on top. It doesn't mean that every paint job has to use a primer, for example when you're just fixing paint in one spot without sanding it down to bare metal, or when you're fixing non-metal parts. But generally, if you want to paint your car correctly, a primer is essential. Without a primer, the bare metal surface will reject the paint and eventually rust quickly.
You usually need to apply 2-3 coats of primer on the car before painting. Make sure the primer and paint are compatible with each other. There are many different types and brands of primers and paints, and they may be suitable for different systems. Incompatible primers and paints will absolutely give you a bad result on your car, as the paint won't adhere, check, and crack. Spray one coat of primer, wait for it to dry, sand, clean, spray and sand again and again.
You should wear gloves as the oil from your hands can get on the primer. You have to make sure the surface is smooth, so look for high points and low points. Each time you do this, you have the chance to get rid of any defects left in previous steps. The final surface coat before painting is a sealer, which seals all the primer and provides an even coat for the paint. It won't be worn or sanded off. Leave it on, and you'll get rings around your body.

5. Cleaning
You have to clean the surface like you did with sanding. Blowing, vacuuming, wiping with regular water won't do. I'll give you a four-step cleaning procedure to ensure the best surface for you. Prepare lint-free cloths for cleaning, you'll need a lot of lint-free cloths.
In the first step, you'll use glass cleaner. Spray it on the surface and wipe it clean as usual. Even if the surface looked clean before, you'll immediately see dirt on the cloth. Wipe in only one direction, you don't want the dirt around the whole car spinning. Also, use a clean cloth surface, throw it away and get a new one when it gets dirty on all sides.
The second step will be pre-paint cleaner. You'll see the cloth continue to pick up dust. Continue wiping in only one direction.
The third step can be done with isopropyl alcohol, 75% alcohol mixed with 25% water, which can be bought at a pharmacy or you can make it yourself.
The last step will be tack cloth. Take it out and lay it out for a few minutes to reduce tackiness and use it to wipe your car. Tack cloth will remove any remaining dirt and debris. Then crumple them up and give your car one final wipe.

6. Time and location
If you don't have a paint booth that controls temperature and other factors, you need to carefully consider the time and location for your painting job. First, the time, when during the day will you do your painting? Morning or afternoon? In the summer, it's best to do it in the morning. There are fewer bugs at this time and the temperature isn't too high. But in winter or colder months, you should choose the afternoon. There are no bugs at this time, but it's warmer in the afternoon. The ideal temperature for car painting is between 65-90 degrees Fahrenheit or 18-32 degrees Celsius.
What are the techniques for car painting? For the location, are you doing it in a garage or outside? Many people choose to do it outside as it's convenient and well-ventilated. However, there are many uncontrollable factors outside that can affect your car painting: wind blowing dust, bugs and birds possibly landing on your paint, etc. If you choose to paint in a garage, then you have to seal the garage door with tape and plastic sheets to prevent fumes from entering your house. Keep the garage door open for ventilation. You'll have to sweep the floor frequently, a vacuum cleaner can help you with that. You can also spray the floor with water to keep the dust down. A respirator must be worn to avoid inhaling fumes.

Painting a car requires a lot of patience and effort. You can practice painting with a spray gun and try various painting techniques before actually painting to master its tricks. Follow these tips to give your beloved car a fresh new look!
